When the commander was younger he grew up in a nuclear family. However, there was one noticeable detail within his known extended family, it had all been his fathers relatives. His mother had been a solider of the Military police who had met his father within the walls of Sina and she had settled down after marrying the young noble. It was something that was probably only accepted by his fathers family because his mother had been quite beautiful in her youth but still as a child he had never understood why his mothers family was absent nor had he really questioned it at the time. It was strange now that he would have such questions and answers pushed at him when he was going through the personal briefing for new Captains within the Survey corps.
Jones, that was his mothers maiden name. Nothing unusual at first, it was not an uncommon name after all. It was when he went to check the others family history which he did with all those who were given any sort of power within his corps that he noticed something that made him pause. His mothers name was there as Alfred Jones' great aunt. He felt an odd sense of loss when he read that most of his unknown family was no longer listed as living. Looking at Alfreds family history it seemed that his only family was on the opposite side of Erwins family.
He reclined slightly on his chair and tapped his pen on his desk. It was strange to think that he may have talked to Alfred in the past without the knowledge that his mother and Alfreds grandfather were siblings, he could put the name to the face since his skills had come to his attention a while ago but he was now curious about the other for reasons outside of battle potential. He had yet decided if he would mention what he knew to Alfred, in fact he was curious if Alfred knew himself. But in the end it was no more important an issue than it had been for the last thirty four years of his life.
Usually he would just raise his voice to call someone into his office who was waiting outside to be called in this instance he felt the need to stand up and fetch the other himself who should be waiting for him to call him in at any moment. He put down the new captains file and walked to the door, opening it widely but calmly as he glanced into the hall.
"I am ready to discuss your new position and duties now, Captain Jones." A small, friendly smile graced his lips as they usually did when he talked to much younger soldiers personally. "Please follow me into my office." He held the door open for the other as he took a step back, this would be interesting he thought regardless of what information he disclosed with Jones.
